Free webhosters for custom stuff?

Does anyone have some good experience with a free webhoster which he/she could recommend?

I want to use custom maps and stuff on my server so I need some fastDL.

Dropbox perhaps. As far as I know, you get up to 5 free gb.

from experience using dropbox as your fast dl can be a bit annoying... and their cloud servers do not usually have the capability to handle the traffic load usually needed for a game server

your best off paying for a FTP provider

gameservers even though they are mainstream actually have a REALLY fast redirect service

you just need to specify that if your running it for a MOD that you need to be able to control the extension the redirect is under

I realised that I have 10MB of webspace from my ISP, so that's enough for some sounds. But now the trouble starts.

I added this to my server.cfg:

sv_allowupload 1
sv_allowdownload 1
sv_downloadurl "http://myISP.com/myUsername/pvkii"

The structure of my webspace is:

/pvkii/sound/file.mp3

But he does not download it. I checked whether I can download it from the browser, and this works, so I assume the file rights etc. are set correctly. Also, the plugin is set up properly.

Something I thought about is that my url contains a ~. Don't know, does that make it fail?

this was my problem

MAKE SURE YOUR PUTTING THAT PVK FOLDER IN THE ROOOOOT of your webspace

it must be in the root and everyhting has to be EXACTLY liek the folder shows it

on top of that mess around with the placement of the upload and the download sv commands i remember that if one is before the other it wont work

i cant access my server.cfg atm othewise i would show you my format

as well possibly try putting the download url BEFORE the upload/download commands

aswell try removing the HTTP or adding a www. to the url for somereason the fastdl function seems to not understand basic html and gets confused by the headers

brace your self for one of two scenario's

you either have a format problem

or second scenario

your webserver isnt allowing the echo requests from the game server to the webserver or vice versa

either way its a pain in the ass to troubleshoot it so ahead of time... IM SORRY lol

I already played around with those sv_ commands concerning order, http, www and so on. Didn't help. So I guess my ISP blocks this like they were blocking port forwarding. Never mind.

I installed HLDJ and now I don't need to mess around with that crap

wait.... were you trying to do say sounds or saysound karaoke

i assume that because your using HLDJ now

if so ... it may not be your FASTDL it may be your file format/ saysound.cfg

if so let me know i spent ages working out the bugs on the old animal server and still have all the work i did on that cfg on my pc here check it out...

if you are using your own webserver for your sounds they have to be one in proper sample/bitrate in order for the engine to EVEN play them AND the FASTDL application ONLY looks for bz2 compressed files so if you were just placing the mp3 or wav files in the folder ... it couldnt see them essentially because they arent in the proper format

(bz2 stands for Bzip2 a compression format available with 7zip)

I was talking about saysounds and yeah, I got the configuration right. But I didn't zip the files, just put them up. So you say they must be zipped?

yes indeed if you are using your own webserver instead of a FASTDL server provider

YOU MUST COMPRESS THEM

where as when you use a FASTDL provider they do all the work for you they compress the files and format the folders for you

i only actually had success with the say sound plugin WHEN i used a provider

take a look into just getting a 5 dollar fastdl from gameservers.com and let them know your going to be doing it for PVKii they should be able to setup up the FTP on their end to the point that all you would need to do is add the redirect url to your sv_downloadurl and then add the files/maps to the ftp they provide

after you upload the files they automatically get turned into bz2's but if youd like to keep it cheap and free just keep messing with it

another thing is change the names of the sound files when i finally got it working the files that i got onto the server were wrong bitrate/samplerate so i changed the bit/sample rates but left the filename untouched and loaded it to the ftp

the problem here.... is that the redirect only looks for hte filename name not the actual file details so anyone who downlaoded the original wrong format file WILL NOT download the new format file BECAUSE the file name already exists in their folders

its really weird how the fastdl works for mods

Well you were right about the compression, I bzipped the files and voila, it works. It downloaded a 9MB map in about 20 seconds so I assume it did not download it from my gameserver.

But since I only got 10MB of webspace there, I set up an account at dropbox, but I am having problems with that now. It just won't download the files. I am not sure if I got the right link there.

Any experience with dropbox?
