coming from a 40 ping server to a 100 ping, you notice a big difference. I was reading through the "bugs" and "suggestion" forums, and about 80% of the complaints are from "I hit the guy, heard the sound, and all that jazz, but he takes no damage." This is because of that higher ping difference. The player did in fact hit the opponent... on his computer, but by the time the information is received by the server, he's a few inches out of reach. At 100 ping, this isn't too terribly bad, and is more of an annoyance, but it does put you at a significant disadvantage. Its only really bad when fighting a skirmisher or a parrot.
Higher pings are not really that significant in pvk2, at least not as in Counter-Strike for example.
The only really disadvantage you get by them is that it's much harder to pp because you have less time to react. But 100 should still be good enough for everything above captains cutlass.
And this

is not true, if it was like that you would also miss people with a ping of 50. There's lag compenation for this stuff, so if you hit an opponent while having 400 ping, he will get all the damage you saw your weapon dealing, though you'll first be able to see it after 0.8 seconds.

regardless of lag compensation, its noticeable to me. As I said, in most cases the game plays fine, with exception to parrots in particular.
I bashed a parrot three times today and it did not die. I hear the hit sound from the shield bash but it doesn't seem to register that...My ping is less than 100, too.
an alternative solution is you can get a really fast connection and adjust your packets accordingly
I have a pretty good connection most of the time, but the servers are just too far away to get under 100 ping consistently. Would it be possible for someone with a west coast server already to be transfered into the official servers?
Even moderate lag can really screw up the ranged classes. I can't do my Crossbow sniping on Desert Ruin if my ping is over 100 because by the time I've fired my target is on the other tower. It's just very diffuclt to lead your shots when your target can teleport.
I remember the good ol' days of gaming where 300 Ping was considered the 100 Ping of today.
PS: I think that is the closest thing I've said that makes sense all week.
Beware the beast Man, for he is the Devil's pawn. Alone among God's primates, he kills for sport or lust or greed. Yea, he will murder his brother to possess his brother's land. Let him not breed in great numbers, for he will make a desert of his home and yours. Shun him; drive him back into his jungle lair, for he is the harbinger of death.

But surely it would be nice having servers at the west coast too i guess.

I remember those days.
