[WIP] Reimagining PVK Characters

jRocketjRocket Pixel PunisherPVKII Team
Hey all- as you may know, I am the one who modeled most of the PVK2 characters. The original ones(I believe the berserker, skirmisher, and heavy knight) were done over 10 years ago! In that time, I have come a long way in both artistic and technical knowledge. Well, I had some free time, so I thought it would be fun to revisit them in my own vision, and in a "current-gen" style, and maybe putting them in Unreal Engine 4 if I have the time. I will be updating as I can. Here's the berserker, who looks way more muscley and badass(although the beard needs some work)-

Zerk looks so Clash of Clans-esque. I'm not sure if it's either a good or a bad thing to say regarding the art direction.

Edit: I meant Clash of Clans, not Clash of Titans.

Too much "friendly cartoon" look for my taste.
Somehow it`s harder to believe for me that this character could exist, then current berserker. I don`t know how it`s called, um -immersion?
I`m really sorry for my bad English. I`m not a native speaker.

Yup, the proportions are more comic book like. This is really early and completely untextured. I'm aiming for something more gritty but still exaggerated. PVKII has always had this dual persona of being a comical silly game yet serious in its depictions of some historical classes and weapons. I think the nature of the game lends itself to the former approach so that's why I'm going in that direction.

Here's my take on the skirmisher. I used Marvelous Designer to get the cloth draping looking good.

These models are really nicely done, i don't care if they strafe away from the original models cause it's not ment to look 100% like them. I like how different they look cause i know they will fit in perfectly to what you're aiming for, keep it at man!

Damn, you got some kind of obsession with muscles, and I'm not talking about the muscles themselves, but the unrealistically (unless you take protein all day with steroids) proportioned muscles.

    I'd rather have a Berserker that has well-proportioned muscles and a barrel-chest, like this guy here;
    https://images.duckduckgo.com/iu/?u=https://tse1.mm.bing.net/th?id=OIP.M7b7ee1758241e197bd71e2cb4fb063c7H0&pid=15.1&f=1

And hey, I'm not saying you're obsessed with bodybuilder muscle just because of the Berserker, look at the Skirmisher's muscles!
Although he looks a lot like an adult Beavis! He he hem, hehem!

Well, it's only his forearms. Because he's a sailor, he uses those muscles a lot for pulling rope and such.

You don't get muscles like those doing that, though.

And you know, since it's only his forearms...Popeye the Sailor, he is!

Have you used UE much jR? I really want to get into it just not had the time, use Unity all the time for work and my own project, but UE just looks so delicious! Really want to learn it, temptation to remake island in UE increasing!!!

Yeah i've used it a bit but not as much as unity. Much better for artists and mappers with the material editor. Even has CSG brushes like Hammer.

    There's a hammer importer too https://forums.unrealengine.com/showthread.php?94470-HammUEr-a-Hammer-Worldcraft-map-importer-for-Unreal-Engine

These models would probably look good in a different game or if some new instance of PVK took a different and less cartoonish path. It's weird that even their original creator doesn't seem to be able to recreate the vivid feel that all the original models have to them. I guess da Vinci in his lifetime also didn't see the Mona Lisa as something special he created.

What I'd really like to see someday is a PVKII character in a new engine that retains the original art style and basic looks like stature and facial features.

This is pretty useful, actually. I've always found UnrealEd a bit convoluted for my novice mapping skills, and seeing a tool like this might make me try giving a shot at UDK, even though UE3 got discontinued last year.
Needless to say I'm quite curious to see a PVK map on Unreal Engine. Granted, I've never been a fan of UE's shaders, but it would be interesting seeing the mod converting itself into a fully fledged game, though the chances of it happening are slim.
