I understand why you would block guests from making new topics/replying into old ones, but why block them from reading topics? No offence to the forums, but there are already way too many places screaming "REGISTER FIRST" and many would(or should I say will?) lose their intrest in PVKII if they are required to register before practicly seeing or reading anything (as the forums hold up rather large amount of discussions and info about the mod + replies from the devs to common questions)

    Problem is we have bots that come on here and view every single page they can all at once over and over then I get bitched at by our hosting.
    I'd rather lose a few people who can't take 5 minutes to register than lose our hosting.

    owwie, thats not good.

    Can't you just IP ban the bots? or are they coming from that many different IP's

    They find a new IP every time and I don't find out about it until I get bitched at.

    Could we slap some sort of "sorry" image on the page and explain why then, so that it might be redeemed?

    Same thing happened to a site on my homeserver, some gay bot re-indexed weekly.

    *)
    read access_log , find the bot's "useragent", add robots.txt
    User-agent: bot's useragent (or * for all)
    Disallow: /forums/

    *)
    <meta name="robots" content="noindex,nofollow" />

    *)
    read access_log , find the bot's "useragent",
    if ($_SERVER=="bot's useragent") die();
    or something similar (regex?)
    Could probably write the IPs to a .htaccess banlist, but making it writeable != good idea.

    And,
    *)
    Ask your host to lower the max # of simultaneous connections to a host?

    It's so crazy it just might work. I will make this prayer to your dark god, after I sacrifice a goat to it. How do I pronounce a "*)", though?
