Experiencing severe stutter/lag (not FPS drop)

I've been experiencing severe lag in PVKII.

PVKII on average is slightly laggy for me, even though I have a more than adequate machine.
The lag according to statistics whilst playing, is not from FPS.

The numeral output for 'choke' is where the lag and stuttering appears to be related to.
The choke on almost all servers is above 10, and on butt pirates, about 40.

Now, I'd blame the servers, but my friend Tolin has stated he has absolutely no lag.

I've never ever had to port forward for Source engine, but decided to do it just incase it was a firewall issue, and that didn't solve a thing.
Even though it is clearly a network issue, I tried toying with graphics, lowering them to the absolute lowest, even though I have a GTX 580.
Even tried disabling multi-core in both steam console, and using task manager to set affinity.

No luck.

The lag is so severe, the game is virtually unplayable. I die constantly, because there is a pause/freeze during combat, randomly.

I'm willing to do some demos and dumps if that info is needed. Please help me fix this or I'll have to just give up on playing PVKII, my favourite game.

What's your rate, cl_cmdrate, and cl_updaterate set at?

Do you and Tolin live in the same area and have the same ISP?

Also, during the pauses can you rotate your POV? Does the FPS on your net_graph still fluctuate during them?

I changed them today to a config my friend was using, but it didn't seem to make a difference.
This is the current config, idk what it was before.

    cl_cmdrate = 100
    cl_updaterate = 20

Different states in the US and different ISPs.

The FPS does not appear to drop during these pauses. What I notice is that the choke is high in net_graph 1. Sometimes in net_graph 3 I will see spikes on certain things, but there doesn't seem to be direct correlation between some of those spikes and the pauses/stutters in net_graph 3.

Would you like me to get on the game and make a demo?

Just an idea, maybe you have some background application running, which uses too much of your cpu, that can make a game lag, without any network issues.

Concerning graphics, did you try disable advanced model shaders? I think it`s in Multiplayer options and advanced, not in graphiscs options, caused lag to me when I had a lower end pc.

A friend of mine has the same issues I think. He also described a very unusual amount of stuttering on his screen when his build was waaaay above the min requirements that are required to play. He tried changing the rate settings, re-installing, Verifying cache, -dxlevel80 -dxlevel81 and much more but no avail. It began like 5 months ago and he still is having the issue so he doesn't really bother to play anymore.

    Yes. Send it to peepeewilson[at]gmail.

Also cl_updaterate should be about 100 as well, and rate should be set somewhere over 20,000. You didn't mention what rate was set at so you may already have it dialed in. I doubt changing those values will solve your problem, but it should make registration feel better during combat and could bring down your choke in some servers.

i'm not sure if it's the same problem, but i had this a while ago. i found out that the reason my choke was so high, was that i had a bad hop. take any server's ip adress and check your hops too it. you could have only 1 bad hop, or several. if you find a bad hop, take a screenshot and email it to your isp and ask them to reconfigure/remove that one from your list. hope that helps.

    Check your hops?
Can you enlighten this a bit further?

Unfortunately, a lot of the servers enforce default rates (sv_maxupdaterate 60)

Measure network and Internet performance (Windows NT, 2000, XP, and Vista only)using tracert command to measure the response of each hop in a network path. Your connection to any one server will require multiple "hops" between other servers and networking components. The fewer number of hops, the better. Most connections to a server on the Internet will include at least a dozen hops.

[*]With the command prompt open, typetracert xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx, replacing xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx with an IP address on the Internet.
[*]Press [Enter] and watch as each hop is 'pinged' and logged. The first ping should be your computer, modem, or router, and the last ping should be your target address.
[*]Notice that the response time for points farther away from you will be greater than those closer to you.

so here is a screenshot of what it looks like, i used the Cannabis Clubhouse for my test:

    http://s16.postimage.org/nxl5o6pcj/tracert_example.jpg

i outlined the Latency/Ping in red. you will want to look at those and make sure you don't have a bad one that is giving you like 300 ping or some ridiculous number like that. if you do, the only thing you can do is outline it and take a screenshot and send it to your ISP and tell them re-route your hop, at least, that's the only way i know how to fix it. hope this helps~

Well I looked into it with my buddy yesterday and he seemed to fix it withouth going any near this 'hop' solution. Can't really say what fixed it tho, I think he updated all his recent drives and all dat kind of shirley that he supposed to do a long time ago. Anyways, yea, still thanks for the info though.

ahhhhh. wel lthat's good it wasn't a bad hop, because depending on your ISP it can take some time to fix lol. anyways, congrats!

    rate 25000

or drop it to 10000 if server is laggy.
  • HeiHei and truly did she know the name of the Kong Senior
    edited 5:37PM
No, that makes it worse. Rate should depend on your own network speed, and if your internet is so slow that you have to use a rate lower than 25000 you should just leave.
