Combat in 2.3

CrazytalkCrazytalk TerminatorPVKII Team
Good afternoon everyone!

I bring to you today news about our new combat changes. I know a lot of you have heard that 2.3 will sport a new system of attack and defense and have been itching to know how it will work!

One of the major changes to 2.3 combat is the blocking system. In 2.2, you select one of four directions to block and if the opponent attacks in the corresponding direction you'll be able to perfect parry and counter-attack. This has become quite an issue, as there are only a few players who can perform these blocks on a consistent basis, making it aggravating for the rest!

The new system is similar in the fact that there are still four directions of block and attack, but in 2.3 the block direction is chosen based on the attack direction of your nearest opponent. In other words, if a player is coming at you with an overhead chop and you hold the block button, your weapon will block in the overhead position.

I know what some of you are thinking already, but let me spell out what this does for the average player. When you're not confined to choosing the direction of attack yourself, based on movement, it opens up a much broader range of motion for defense. Tight quarters near gaping holes are no longer death traps for the player trying to block in the direction of the hole! The new system is also easier to pick up for the beginner, but still leaves enough room for mastery (believe me, some of the testers still kick my butt!)

Now, to counter-balance the increase in defensive strategy that the new blocking system allows for, we've added an incentive to those who choose to go on the offense. You are all familiar with the charge bar for weapons and how it increases damage the more charged the weapon is. Well in 2.3, a fully charged attack will also be able to go through a perfect block - eliminating the perfect parry, causing some damage and pushing the opponent back a step. The charge will not remain full for very long, there will be only a window of opportunity. This gives each weapon a timing to master, as each one has different attack speeds. Players who excel in the game right now will still be able to master techniques, but without the utter annihilation of newer players that is the current system!

We've also eliminated the 2 second stuns from being parried. We found them annoying and reduced them down to a small effect to show you've been parried. Blocking in the wrong direction has a chance to cause a small stun, though these stuns are nowhere near as annoying as the ones in 2.2.

In other news, it's my pleasure to introduce you guys to a new Pirate-themed energy drink called RootJack. RootJack has all the kick you need from an energy drink, plus the awesomeness that is Orange flavored Root-Beer. Not only that, but it's sporting one of the coolest logos on its back label!

So if ye' be dyin' of the scurvy, head on over to RootJack.com and find out how to get yourself some of this tasty beverage.

We're also currently looking for more artists to fill out our ranks and help us get updates out the door. Check out our Recruitment Page to see if you've got the skills and interest that we're looking for. Whether you're looking for a great addition to your resume, or have a passion for making games and want your work to be seen by thousands, now's a great time to get your foot in the door as we'll be releasing with Steamworks come 2.3!

That's all for now. Join us next time where we'll shed some light on other combat changes - Shield Bashing and Blocking, the mechanics of the Spear and Javelin and some new moves given to the Skirmisher! You don't want to miss it so be sure to check our forums and site regularly!

Sorry if this is a stoopid question but...

If you automatically block in the direction your nearest opponent is attacking, then what's the point of choosing an attack direction in the first place?

and how do you ever block in the wrong direction and get a small stun, if you don't choose the block direction any more? unsure.gif

news biggrin.gif the new blocking system appears to be quite appealing for new players and it will certainly speed up the game a lot. i am trying to imagine how it would be but i think i just need to wait and see for myself. hopefully 2.3 will be out soon

    WOO!

Of course with me being a total nub none of this really matters to me. sad.gif

Though I AM glad the 2 second stun is gone. Really annoyed me as a Berserker.

I hope the updates don't change it too much and make pvk a different game.

I like the 2.2 parry and combat system just fine (even if i do get parried the hell out of), but i'll wait and see what comes.

i do hope the new system encourages attacking more than 2.2 does, where parrying is everything.

    P.S.: Hooray, news!!

Will Turner: You didn't beat me. You ignored the rules of engagement. In a fair fight, I'd kill you.
Jack Sparrow: That's not much incentive for me to fight fair, then, is it?

It won't, cause everyone will be playing the Gestir.

I just realized that the block system is similar to the blocksystem of "Mount & Blade". (Except the ability to 'break' the block)
A game which I enjoyed, this system will work fine, and will defenitly bring the pace of battle to a better and higher level

Can't say I'm not skeptical about such a radical change but I everything definetely sounds awesome biggrin.gif Having the game be playable from the start is probably good since most gamers are casual (since there are so many other brilliant games out there, few were going to invest the time to perfect the parrying system)

I'm intrigued about the Javellins tongue.gif

This. sad.gif Hopefully it'll work well, and allow the cas. players to stand a better chance, but I hope it doesn't remove the skill element which makes the game so engrossing against skilled players.

Is there a risk of it being detrimental to players who want to master the system though, by making the steps between new-player to experienced-player fewer?

I'm just curious as I thoroughly enjoy PvK as it is now, and I hope it doesn't lose any of its charm as a silly but skilful game in favour of a TF2 style mayhem, which I never really found that appealing. sad.gif

yeah hate to sound like a negative nancy, but if you guys really do DESTROY the amazing combat system that you currently have, you wont see me in game. Damn near every PVK2 player i have spoken to agrees with me.....
its a DAMN shame that ur gonna ruin the incredible system you already had. 2.2 is the best first person melee game available, and i promise you ill probably never open 2.3 :-/.

"noob-friendly" translates to "bad game" for MOST PCgamers........

Lion, this new system will make you better at the game. Relax.

Everyone else, I had a chance to ask Crazytalk a few questions and he made the new system sound a little more reasonable than he did in the post. You need to keep in mind that 2 second stuns are no more. Even though noobs will be able to score more perfect parries, they will most likely still have trouble capitolizing on them. While the more advanced players who are familiar with instant counter attacks will. Also, it sounds to me like there is a longer delay between switching block directions so if you simply approach an enemy with an attack charged, then block and switch your direction you will most likely be able to avoid being blocked. The people who wait until the last second to block will be the ones getting the most perfect parries.

Before we get all up in arms about the direction of the game we need to recognize a few things. This is not our game, we simply play it. Holding the game for ransom by saying you will no longer play it is NOT going to make them change their minds. The PVK team has never let us down before, so who are we to doubt them?

Lord Scrotum and lion989 nailed it. this smells like the end to me... balancing my hard earned skills with thy noobies ? is such a deal breaker dude. icon_stabhead.gif

sure ill give it a try, but I won't deny I've got some really bad taste in my mouth now. dry.gif hopefully it turns out good enough so I can just keep playing this jewel.
now excuse me I need to have some long 2.2 sessions, till you make it a single button defense kind of game, thus becoming a single button attack as well.
Jesus Christ ! how could you ?! image
