2.3 Features and Effects

Hello fellow gamers!

As promised, we're excited to bring you news today of some new effects and Orange Box features included in PVKII Beta 2.3!

Some of the new features you can expect from 2.3 include:
    Soft CollisionsSteam Community IntegrationNew Shader EffectsColor CorrectionCoin TrailsFacial AnimationNew Particle System

Soft Collisions
We've added soft player collisions to make it easier to get around, without constantly getting stuck on teammates - especially those who like to block doorways. Full clipping will only occur on enemies and when a teammate of yours has either the grail or a treasure chest. This will keep players from running through teammates while escaping an enemy in tight places, not allowing for pursuit. Soft collisions are so nice in a fast paced melee game like PVKII and we know you'll love them!

Steam Community Integration
With 2.3 comes Steamworks and Steam Community integration. What this means is players will have access to achievements and automatic updates, as well as be able to show their Steam Name and Icon on the scoreboard. We have also set it up so we can integrate certain features with specific Groups in the Steam Community. Make sure you join PVKII's Official Game Group so you don't miss out on future surprises for group members only!

New Shader Effects
The Orange Box engine has allowed us to set up some nice shader effects and proxies. This includes more realistic eyes and blood on weapons that have been used in battle. You'll also notice the players will have a more realistic look to them, including the Heavy Knight's shiny armor!

Color Correction
2.3 has some amazing new effects using in-game color correction. Some of the cases where color correction is used include:
Death Vision
Colors seem to bleed out as death approaches.

Berserk Vision
As the Berserker's heart explodes with rage, his vision turns a bloody red.

Grail Vision
The holy grail empowers the player, turning their vision a heavenly gold.

(You'll notice the enemy's body will glow, keeping them from hiding in dark places!)

Coin Trails
A new treat in the booty game mode is the coin trail. As enemies try to escape with your chests, you'll have an easier time tracking them down by following the booty trail! Better be quick though, the trail fades out after a bit.

Facial Animation
We've also been hard at work updating our player models to integrate with face poser software. Expressions in 2.3 will match the state of the player's combat and health, while his lips synchronize to his taunts!

Particle System
With the Orange Box port comes an amazing new particle system. This system allows for some awesome effects that weren't possible in the old engine. Flames look a lot cooler, dust particles can float and fall around, even the wick of the keg has a cool new look to it!

Check back with us next week for a look at some of the new particle effects and facial animations being used in 2.3. This will include video of the new Sudden Death effects in Arena and Cathedral, as well as some of the lip synchronization given to player taunts. You are no man!

    Awesome news :D

    Though I hope the soft collisions will not allow for example 4 players to stand in the same spot, and have like 1 player crouching holding a shield, another standing holding a shield, another holding a melee weapon, and the last one holding a ranged weapon, which might result in a rather deadly enemy that can attack and shield at the same time? Or is it just reduced, but still collision enabled with teammates? (eg. Smaller collision radius or something like that..)

    It's a push so you can run through players, but are easily pushed out of their space when not moving.

    wow very good news
    i knew you have some little surprises for us like the coin trails, i like that icon_yay.gif
    the heavy knights looks really awesome too

    but i would prefer full clipping because blocking isnt a big problem in pvk at all and soft collision sounds really unrealastic.

    and what happened to the crosshairs when you use a melee weapon? Did you remove them?

    The arena screenshot doesn't properly capture the awesomeness of the new sudden death. Wait for the vid (hopefully it'll be in HD).

    Bob, the soft clipping is a huge help. Making all players concrete blocks like it is now isn't exactly realistic either. ;p

    Crosshairs for melee weapons can already be toggled on and off in 2.2 in your advanced mutliplayer options.

    Bob the way the collisions work now is as you get closer to the center of a player you will be pushed more and more so it looks more like you are sliding beside someone usually.

    I broke my eyes to your sexy updates. Only by checking screens, I see you've done great job and making "nearly" full usage of OB. I hope with steamworks you get much better community (nothing against current one), more players and of course more fans. Looking forward to join you in .... near future smile.gif

    coin trail is a great feature, but is it necessary. booty works well without it, is it worth delaying the release or would it be better to make it the first small updated released through steamworks. that would certainly keep people busy for a while. however if it was only done because there was time to, because other people were busy with their work and it was done meanwhile, then i am glad that you are releasing it with 2.3. anyways thanks for the news about 2.3, i really hope that it will be released soon.

    In case no1 noticed.... there are at least 2 new Custom Death Notices, berserker death by losing special (a wolf) and punch kill by pirate right arm (a punch)

    Coin Trail was a simple to implement feature, It has nothing to do with the time it takes to patch. It is a combination of things that take time and not really one specific change or addition.

    It would be cool to see my suggestion (for the special bar to decrease while it's being used for the Berserker's special) make it into 2.3 . smile.gif

    ok, then number 2 applyes.

    it would we cool if while being in berserkvision enemeys would start to glow red and friends would rather get a greyish colour. this would get an optimum out of the berserker's special as it would help to focus and aim.

    btw: the berserkers hands look like plastic, are they already finished?

    well- the game only needed new characters.. but okay.. when u are doing all this 2 im just more excited.. its gotta be really REALLY great... and i gonna make a server (24/7) when the 2.3 is coming where u can vote map... votekick,voteban, and all that .. rank system =)

    Very awesome guys, the effects look great.

    Thanks to the team for putting so much effort into adopting and utilizing the new technology of the engine.

    The one question I have though is how are the machines going to handle all of this?

    the coin trails are really cool
    but I wouldnt add the "... grabbed a chest" message
    it would just spam the kill messages
    for example when a team on island has 5 chests and is about to win most of the players on the other teams just run into their base, take the chests and throw them out of the score zone, then someone returns the chests and so on.
    that would just be spamming and very annoying.
